Acupuncture for Neuropathy: What 27 Years of Clinical Experience Has Shown Me

After more than 27 years in practice, very little surprises me anymore—but I continue to find deep satisfaction in helping patients regain function and quality of life they believed was lost. One of the most consistent and meaningful areas where I see this happen is in the treatment of neuropathy with acupuncture.

Early in my career, acupuncture profoundly shaped how I viewed healing.

“As a young practitioner, I was in awe of the patient results that were accomplished with acupuncture treatments. Patients were able to reduce pain, feel their toes, and regain balance.”

At the time, those outcomes felt remarkable. Patients who had lived with burning, tingling, numbness, or instability for years were suddenly noticing real changes. They could feel the floor beneath their feet again. They walked with greater confidence. They slept better and worried less about falling.

Today, I’m no longer in awe—and that’s a good thing.

I’m no longer amazed because the clinical outcomes are so consistent. Over decades of practice in Hermann and Montgomery City, Missouri, I’ve seen acupuncture create measurable, repeatable improvements for patients struggling with neuropathy. When applied correctly and as part of a thoughtful, individualized care plan, acupuncture doesn’t just mask symptoms—it helps restore communication within the nervous system.

Why Acupuncture Works for Neuropathy

Neuropathy often involves impaired nerve signaling, reduced circulation, and chronic inflammation. Acupuncture addresses these factors by stimulating specific points that help:

  • Improve blood flow to affected nerves

  • Reduce inflammatory stress on the nervous system

  • Encourage nerve signaling and sensory feedback

  • Support balance and stability

Patients commonly report reduced pain, improved sensation in their feet or hands, and better confidence while walking—changes that make a real difference in daily life.

What a Typical Acupuncture Treatment Plan Looks Like

While every case of neuropathy is unique, there is a general structure that allows us to evaluate progress in a meaningful and objective way.

A typical treatment plan begins with one visit per week for four weeks.

Your first office visit includes a thorough health history and examination designed to identify contributing factors and determine whether acupuncture for neuropathy is a viable option for you. If it is appropriate, acupuncture treatment will begin immediately following the examination.

In most cases, we expect to see measurable improvements within the first four weeks. These may include reduced pain, improved sensation, better balance, or increased confidence during daily activities.

At the end of this initial phase, a reevaluation is performed to assess progress and determine the most appropriate next steps. While this outline represents a typical approach, every treatment plan is customized based on the individual patient’s condition, response to care, and personal goals.
