Alpha Gal

What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Alpha-gal (galactose-cx-1, 3-galactose) is a sugar molecule found in most mammals (beef, pork, lamb, venison) and their byproducts, such as dairy. Notably, it is not present in "Fins and Feathers" (fish, chicken, or turkey).

  • The Cause: Typically transferred via the Lone Star Tick, which "triggers" the body to produce specific IgE antibodies against this sugar.

  • The "Time Bomb" Effect: Unlike typical food allergies that occur instantly, Alpha-Gal is famous for its delayed reaction. Because the body must digest the meat to release the sugar into the bloodstream, symptoms usually do not appear until 2 to 6+ hours after exposure.

  • Why This Matters: This delay often makes it difficult for patients to connect their late-night hives or GI distress to the burger they had for dinner.

Could You Have Alpha-Gal? (Symptom Checklist)

Symptoms are varied and can affect multiple systems. Check if you experience any of the following:

  • Digestive: Stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhea, or nausea.

  • Skin: Hives, chronic itching, redness, or flushing.

  • Musculoskeletal: Significant muscle and joint pain or "flu-like" aches.

  • Delayed Timing: Symptoms that appear 2–6+ hours after eating meat or dairy.

Our Integrated Treatment Approach

We move patients from reactivity to resilience through a data-driven process performed by Dr. Douglas H. Meyer.

  1. Diagnosis: A blood test to identify specific Alpha-gal IgE antibodies for beef, pork, and lamb.

  2. Elimination Diet: Strict removal of mammalian products and hidden sources like gelatin to quiet the immune system.

  3. Acupuncture: Targeted sessions to reduce histamine production and help "reprogram" the immune response.

  4. Lab Monitoring: Initial labs are taken within 1 month of starting; retesting is performed after the 6-week protocol.

What to Expect

  • The First Visit: Your initial office visit with Dr. Douglas H. Meyer takes approximately 90 minutes. This includes a thorough history, a physical examination, and your first acupuncture treatment on the same day.

  • Follow-Up Treatments: These sessions are approximately 45 minutes from start to finish.

  • Results: Clinical studies show acupuncture can be highly effective, with some Success Rates reported as high as 94-96%. Most Meyer Method patients receive symptomatic relief within just 2–3 treatments.

Clinician's Note

"We have seen a significant increase in Alpha-Gal cases in our local community, and we are now receiving calls from patients traveling hours away to seek specialized care. This rise highlights the critical need for a root-cause approach that moves beyond simple avoidance toward true immune system resilience." — Dr. Douglas H. Meyer

The Recovery Milestone

Our goal is to see your Alpha-gal levels fall to 0.1 kU/L or lower. At this stage, patients are typically able to reintroduce meat into their diet.

⚠️ CAUTION: Safe Reintroduction

While hitting the 0.1 kU/L threshold is a major success, meat reintroduction must be handled carefully. This process must be done under the direct supervision of Dr. Douglas H. Meyer to ensure your immune system remains stable.
